Old but not wise, retired programmer/analyst. Have taken up the bass guitar, play and sing in a band. Like biking and golf. Learning Python.
Elegant - but I don't like the use of "l" (ell) as a variable looks too much like a one. I am also a bit leery of multiple returns in a function.

Lovely solution, very elegant - maybe include a comment to let less sophisticated people know what you are doing.
